Mesothelioma- asbestos causing disease

Mesothelioma is a cancerous health disease caused by exposure to asbestos fibres or asbestos dust particles.

Mesothelioma attack zones:

Three parts of the human physiology or anatomy primarily affected by mesothelioma disease are
1. The Lungs (as a result of inhalation of asbestos dust particles in the surrounding air breathed in),
2. The Heart and
3. The Abdomen -(both organs as a result of ingestion (i.e. swallowing) of asbestos fibres).

Mesothelioma symptoms:

People suffering from Mesothelioma disease show characteristic symptoms of coughing, difficulty with breathing well, shortness of breathe, nausea /vomiting, pain in the chest area and pain in the abdomen amongst others.

Though these symptoms may be confused with common sicknesses, any prior exposure to asbestos fibres/ dust particles in addition to manifestation of any of these symptoms must be taken seriously and adequate medical attention sought by immediately consulting a qualified medical personnel or physician.

Mesothelioma types:

1. Mesothelioma disease that affects the heart is referred to as Pericardial Mesothelioma;
2. Mesothelioma disease that affects the Lungs is referred to as Pleural Mesothelioma,
3. Mesothelioma disease that affects the Abdomen is referred to as Peritoneal Mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma risk prone areas:

People commonly at risk of Mesothelioma disease are employees/ staff of asbestos manufacturing/ producing companies/ industries such as asbestos based roofing sheets, sewage (pvc) pipes, ceiling tiles, floor tiles for residential/ industrial building materials utilisation; or those in companies that produce asbestos by products such as brake pads, clutch discs for the automotive business trade.

Another class of people at risk of contracting Mesothelioma disease are people living close to (i.e. in the vicinity of) asbestos utilising companies because of undue exposure to asbestos dust particles causing air pollution in such areas. Inhalation of such contaminated air brings them at risk.

Family members of people working in asbestos producing companies/ companies utilising asbestos are also at risk. This is as a result of asbestos fibres and dust particles which may have been carried/ brought on their skin, clothing, shoes and hair home.

Retired workers/ pensioners (i.e. no longer in active service) are also at risk due to prior exposure to asbestos fibres and dust particles.

Mesothelioma diagnosis and treatment:

For proper diagnosis and adequate treatment of Mesothelioma disease (for the Heart - Pericardial Mesothelioma, or the Lungs- Pleural Mesothelioma, or the Abdomen- Peritoneal Mesothelioma), the affected person is encouraged to seek for immediate medical care and attention (see a Pathologist).

Treatment of the disease however may involve having to undergo X-rays and Scans to determine location, size and type of infection/ disease present and the appropriate treatment to be administered.

Mesothelioma is an asbestos causing disease and as such any known person(s) or family relation who has/had been in contact with asbestos directly or indirectly should endeavor to run a medical check in order to be on a safe side.

Early diagnosis will better facilitate early treatment in the event one is discovered to have start showing symptoms of onset of mesothelioma attack.
